Serving as ACOG President is indeed an honor. It is also a significant responsibility involving accountability to the 58,000 members who pay dues to our organization. We are the premier organization advocating for obstetrics and gynecology and women’s health care. As ACOG members, we are above all things dedicated to striving for and preserving our reputation of excellence, our credibility and our integrity in the pursuit of the best in women’s health care delivery.
This has been an interesting and exciting year for me to say the very least. The meetings, the travel, the interactions with other medical societies, and advocacy efforts were all expected. Yes, there have been challenges, conflicts, resolutions, and clearly, many positive accomplishments. However, I did not expect that almost every waking hour would include some activity related to ACOG.
As I hope you’re already aware, the ACOG Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting begins on Saturday, May 2, 2015. The changes in our annual meeting are significant, most notably based on the program committee’s response to member feedback about the need for more science. As a result, we are increasing the science in the clinical practice session and adding hands-on courses. The schedule is directly related to our members’ desire to begin the meeting on the weekend, thus minimizing time away from their practices and family obligations. The theme of this year’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco is “Teaming Up for Women’s Health,” which focuses on the necessity for quality and accessible health care for women through an evidence-based, coordinated, multi-disciplinary team approach.
As my year as ACOG President comes to an end, I want to again emphasize that the true strength of ACOG is in our members. We are indeed a team—a very large team. Throughout this past year, we have worked diligently on collaborative practice models, health care team leadership, and adaptation of evolving practices of obstetrics and gynecology. There is no doubt in my mind that the obstetricians and gynecologists and women’s health care providers of ACOG comprise the most powerful team on the planet for the advocacy and delivery of women’s health care. The future of women’s health care is in our hands. And together we can and will continue to make a difference for our wives, mothers, daughters, granddaughters, sisters and women everywhere.
